Oudtshoorn, 08 October 2024 – The Eden Cycling Association, in partnership with the Greater Oudtshoorn Municipality, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports, and the National Lottery Commission, organized this prestigious event for the fourth consecutive year on 27 and 29 September 2024.
The 2024 National Youth Road Championships, a highlight on the youth cycling calendar, recently concluded in Oudtshoorn, hosted by Eden Cycling and supported by the Western Cape Cycling Association. On behalf of both organizations, the Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn extends his heartfelt gratitude to all the riders, spectators, and officials who made this event a success.
The winning team was Western Cape Cycling, followed by Gauteng Cycling in second place and Eastern Cape Cycling in third place.
This year marked the fourth time Eden Cycling Association has had the honour of organizing this prestigious championship in Oudtshoorn. Corné Bence, President of the Western Cape Cycling Association, acknowledged the support and stated, “We are truly thankful to our sponsors, DCAS, the National Lotteries Commission, and the Oudtshoorn Municipality—for their continued backing. Their commitment, along with the assistance of local authorities, ensured the event ran smoothly with crucial funding and logistical support.”
The championships, held over several days, featured a lineup of races that tested the skills and endurance of the young athletes. The competition included the Individual Time Trial, Road Race, and the exhilarating Criterium race, showcasing South Africa’s emerging cycling talent.
The Executive Mayor of the Greater Oudtshoorn, Alderman Johan Allers and Portfolio Councillor Leon Campher were part of the prize-giving ceremonies on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Their presence underscored the municipality’s support for youth development in sports, and they helped celebrate the achievements of all the young riders who competed in this prestigious event.
“Oudtshoorn, with its scenic routes and welcoming community, proved to be the perfect backdrop for the championship” said Bence. The local VGK Church Hall on Bontebok Avenue served as the venue for registration and the Criterium, while the Individual Time Trial took place at Wilgewandel, and the Road Race unfolded against the breathtaking landscape of the Cango Caves area.
Mayor Allers, on behalf of the Greater Oudtshoorn Municipality, extended his best wishes to all the participants and hoped that each rider had achieved their goals, while also enjoying the hospitality and friendliness that Oudtshoorn and the Western Cape had to offer.
“We also wish to acknowledge the hard-working team behind the scenes, whose dedication made this event possible”.
“Thank you once again to everyone involved for their efforts and commitment to making the 2024 National Youth Road Championships a success and making it part of Oudtshoorn’s proud sporting tradition.”
